The following hostels are all in or near the city centre, making them prime locations from which to shop and see the sights. Hostels mean that guests, generally speaking, should expect to share close quarters with fellow travellers, and that includes communal showers and toilets. However, it can make for a great way to get to know people from around the world.
Danhostel Copenhagen City in Copenhagen
Danhostel Copenhagen City is a 16-storey building at H.C. Andersen Boulevard 50 that houses 1,020 beds and overlooks the harbour. Opened in 2005, it’s a modern and non-smoking facility within walking distance of the City Hall square and the main railway station. Some of the rooms on the upper floors have panoramic views over the city, but these rooms are subject to availability.
This hostel offers lockers, rental bikes and kitchen facilities. Guests may bring their own sheets and towel, but may rent them for about 60 Danish kroner for sheets and about 10 Danish kroner for a towel. The cost of staying overnight is more expensive on Fridays and Saturdays, and least expensive on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Prices are about 130-195 Danish kroner for a bed in a shared room, to about 780-1170 Danish kroner for a six-person room with shower and toilet. Non-members pay 35 Danish kroner extra a night. Breakfast is available for about 60 Danish kroner. Bookings can be made online.
City Public Hostel in Copenhagen
City Public Hostel opens its doors to travellers of all ages from May to August. Located at Absalonsgade 8, behind Copenhagen City Museum, the hostel has a grass front yard and a backyard, where guest can even barbecue. Guests may also make use of a lounge, 24-reception, and free Wi-Fi with their own laptop or may use the hostel’s computer for a small fee.
City Public Hostel is an independent hostel, so guests aren’t required to be a member of a hostel “club” of any kind. Prices are about 125 Danish kroner for a bed in big dorm (without a blanket) to about 165 Danish kroner for a bed in small dorm (with a blanket). A sheet and pillow is about 40 Danish kroner, and about 10 Danish kroner each will get guests a pillow, towel or extra blanket.
Breakfast is also available, for about 30 Danish kroner if it’s ordered with a bed, and about 40 Danish kroner if it’s not ordered with a bed. Bookings may be made online, but the hostel only accepts cash — no credit cards.
The Danish YMCA/YWCA in Copenhagen
It’s large and somewhat grungy, but it’s cheap: The Danish YMCA/YWCA in central Copenhagen costs about 95 Danish kroner for a dorm bed, about 15 Danish kroner for sheets, and about 25 Danish kroner for breakfast. This hostel, at Valdemarsgade 15, is only open in July and August. The train station and a bust stop are only a 10-minute walk away. Call 33 31 15 74 for more information.
Central Copenhagen offers travellers a few hostels to choose from, which include basic amenities for little cost. The savings can translate into more funds that can be spent on exploring Copenhagen or the rest of Denmark, for those heading further afield. Travellers are advised to book their all their hostels in advance, to increase their chances — and peace of mind — of having places to stay.
